THE NULLABOR

Filled up the water bottles and went to the supermarket for some extra water and a chocolate bar, just as emergency rations. Then Leonard Cohen, Archie Roach, the Proclaimers and I set off to find and cross the Nullabor. Again I loved the scenery. The Nullabor is flat and (obviously) treeless but it has a charm about it. I stopped at a few places so I could view the Great Australian Bight. Now that is magnificent. Parts of the water are a light blue colour, a colour I have never seen in the ocean before. The waves batter the base of the cliffs relentlessly and you can't help but be awed by the power that is there. Worth seeing. There were a few viewing places and caravans would often be stopped to have a look at the view.

Drove through Penong, Bookabie, Yalata, Nullabor Roadhouse and Border Village, Eucla, Mundrabilla, Cocklebiddy and Caiguna. Most you blinked and they were gone, actually some I am still not sure they were there. The border check point was interesting. I stopped 30 kms short to view the ocean. There were a few caravans there and I chatted with an elderly couple who were cooking. They told me they were cooking up all their vegetables as you could take cooked vegetables across the border but not fresh ones. So I gave them all I had left to cook. At the border I struck the new guy.....he went through every thing. He was amazed I had so many spices and kept saying "you must have honey"... you are not allowed to take honey into WA either.

I ended up driving 900 kms today and mostly at about 90 km/hr. It took a while but I can't tell you how long because of the differences in time zones...I didn't have a clue. Camped out in an isolated spot...but the stars were magical. In the morning I awoke at my normal time 6am. But the sun was shining and it was hot already. Other days 6am was still dark. Checked my time again.....yep 6am Western Australia time. BUT in Adelaide it was 8.30 am, Brisbane 8 am and Sydney it was 9 am, and down here they also have 'local time' and 'border time'. At one roadhouse there were 3 or 4 clocks...all different. And it only got worse later when I found out it was Tuesday not Wednesday as I had been convinced it was!
